Justin Vernon ...

  • HT Staff’s 25 Best Albums Of 2011: #5 – #1 ..
All week-long we’ve been counting down our staff’s picks for the best albums of 2011. Today, on the last workday of the year, we reveal the top of our list. When Hidden Track was started in 2006 there were plenty of sites dedicated to indie rock and a slew of sites devoted to improvisational and classic rock bands, but few blogs (and bands for that matter) bridged the gap between the forms. That’s where we came in and five years later the results of our list shows that’s still where our staff’s interests lie, especially ...

  • HT Staff’s 25 Best Albums Of 2011: #10 – #6 ..
All week long we’ve been looking at our staff’s choices for the best albums of 2011 five LPs at a time. Our submissions include all styles of music from bluegrass to jazz, jam to indie, electronica to rap, as well as everything in between (but sorry Nefertiti’s Fjord it just wasn’t the year for lesbian-Afro-Norwegian-funk music). At the end of the day, we’re a music blog. Everyone is encouraged to write about what they like with no motives, no editorial biases, and no strings attached. We hope that comes across in our picks. We’re ...

  • SoundDessert's Best Albums of 2011
These are the 20 albums that wowed me, stayed with me, and that I played incessantly this past year (with the exception of a couple end-of-year releases (e.g. Black Keys), but these late comers still deserve equal praise). They became my partners-in-crime for dashing around the streets of New York, getting revved up for a night out, or calming my nerves when I needed some peace of mind. Any of your favorites missing from this list? Share them in the comments! Click the links to hear samples from the albums. Adele - 21 Who had the best year ever? Why ...

The Black Keys didn’t keep us waiting long for their new album reuniting with old co-conspirator Danger Mouse in the process. ‘El Camino‘ is further proof that the duo’s unlikely success is not a fluke. Cougar writer Cole added this to his top 10 explaining “‘El Camino’ is not The Black Keys’ best album. Frankly [...]

  • HT Staff’s 25 Best Albums Of 2011: #20 – #16 ..
Here at Hidden Track, compiling our end of the year list of the 25 best albums has been eerily similar to the process of devising another top 25 list – the college football top 25. When we started four years ago, we attempted to devise a quantitative methodology that systematized the rankings and took the individual biases out of the equation, while still incorporating the collective views of everyone involved at HT. Well, that was sort of our BCS. This year we’re going back to the old school and running it AP Top 25 style. In other words, every writer ...

Depending on your definition of “Indie”, maybe some of the artists listed in today’s mix tape won’t fit the description for you. Regardless of genre classification, it’s been a great year for new music and there is no shortage of interesting female musicians in the pack – let’s have a listen to six great cuts. Leading off we have Merrill Garbus aka tUnE-yArDs with Gangsta from her album W H O K I L L which has been doing quite well in year-end lists. Maybe you don’t consider Feist to be especially Indie, but this track ...

  • David Lynch – Crazy Clown Time
On Further Review by Julie Stoller What's the deal with David Lynch? David Lynch - Stone's Gone Up As the man responsible for blowing minds with the surreal, supernatural, ridiculously addictive soap opera spectacular that was Twin Peaks , and such deliciously twisted films such as Blue Velvet, Lost Highways, and Mulholland Drive, it was inevitable that David Lynch , on his debut album, would conjure up something quite interesting... Though Lynch has notably collaborated with Angelo Badalamenti (Twin Peaks), Polish pianist Marek Zebrowski (Inland Empire), Sparklehorse and Danger Mouse (Dark Night of the Soul), and most recently Chrysta Bell (This ...

  • Bloggy Goodness: Black Keys Say No To Stream ..
For those of you that were hoping to stream The Black Keys new album El Camino via sites such as Spotify, MOG, Rdio and the like, may have been taken by surprise when the blues-rock act’s record was nowhere to found. Well, it turns out that Dan Auerbach and Patrick Carney had a very legit reason for not allowing it to be streamed, as Carney gave this explanation to VH1 – “We decided for this album to not allow music services to stream the entire album, because it’s becoming more popular, but it still isn’t at a point ...
