  • Mimicking Birds - "Walking in the Air"
I still discover music that is a year or two old that I either missed or just never got around to hitting play. The music of Mimicking Birds is one of those quality bands that seem to have gone under a lot of peoples radar, which is not good because this band is great. The Portland trio make a soothing sound of folk/pop and "Walking in the Air" is a testament to that sound. They recorded their debut album back in 2009 with Isaac Brock , the Modest Mouse frontman, in his home studio. If you got a chance to ...

Click here for download Song: Mimicking Birds - Walking In The Air [download here ] What's so good? This beautiful track “Walking In The Air” was uncovered by The Music Ninja a couple days back. The song itself is a wonderful folk escapade, with soothing vocals and varied instrumentation. Mimicking Birds, a Portland trio, were fortunate to record their debut album in the home studio of Modest Mouse’s Isaac Brock. Not only that — they then proceeded to tour with the band (meaning it’s possible that some of you may have already heard them). You can get a copy of ...

  • Morning Teleportation
You Should Know It's fitting that the man behind the influential Modest Mouse has such a golden ear. Isaac Brock, who recently brought you Mimicking Birds and discovered Wolf Parade as an A&R; man for Sub Pop now brings you Morning Teleportation, a psych-rock quintet hailing from Portland, OR. The band's debut album, Expanding Anyway , was recently released via Glacial Pace Records, Brock's imprint. The band frantically combines a variety of instruments from banjo to trumpet to synths to create a genre-bending sound informed not only by the likes of Brock's band, but also by folk ...

  • Morning Teleportation - "Expanding Anyway" ..
Morning Teleportation debut their first album Expanding Anyway today on Glacial Pace Recordings, the label run by Isaac Brock of Modest Mouse. The album also produced by Isaac is a trippy art-rock ride with the band’s youthful restlessness, wild, caterwauling yet heartfelt vocals, and strange psychedelia mixed with classic rock and folk tendencies channeled through the energy and intensity of punk rock. Their eclectic sound would fit right in with both the Bonnaroo crowd and at a basement show. “Boom Puma” opens the album with wild screams before launching into a spastic vamp complete with banging keyboards and a ...

  • Jesse Sykes: Interview
The immediately striking thing about Jesse Sykes is that she seems like a person out of time. She looks like she should have been one of Dylan’s muses in the '60s rather than getting out of a rented SUV and asking directions to the little venue where Paste Magazine is officially ending the tour that serves as its wake. The music she plays suffers similarly. Sykes, along with her loose backing collective The Sweet Hereafter, plays a stripped-down, earnest take on country and folk that is too raw to find much of an audience among country fans and not ...

Recommended Show: WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 20, 2010 MATH THE BAND @ CAKE SHOP 152 Ludlow St New York, NY 10002 $10, 7PM I should probably post some sort of disclaimer that not ALL of the shows in these posts are technically CMJ shows (meaning that damned badge might not get you into them). Of course, those badges often do no good anyway when shows are "badged-out" (a version of sold out that means a CMJ badge will no longer get you into a show). We only hope that sort of good fortune for Math the Band , who play at Cake Shop tonight ...
