Twin Shadow

It’s high noon in Brooklyn but its always midnight on southern, dead end suburban streets. Here, there is total silence except for the house at the very end, where inside a tin roof garage, teenagers are kissing for the first time. The humidity is too great, the boys peel off white t... Read More

  • Feature: Report: Laneway Sydney 2012
KATE HENNESSY reports on the Sydney leg of the St Jerome’s Laneway Festival, which took place at Sydney College of the Arts in Rozelle on Sunday (February 5). Photos by ELIZE STRYDOM . Never trust anyone over 30 (to review a music festival). Known for our pernickety gripes, misanthropic snipes and general nitpickery often we can’t see the wood (the music) for the trees (the irritations). The task is handled better by breezy early-20-somethings to whom those perennial festival agitations (lack of dunnies, shade, cheap booze and nice food; glut of dickheads, schedule clashes, short sets and clusterfucks) make ...

  • Feature: Report: Laneway Melbourne 2012
DOUG WALLEN and NICK ARGYRIOU review 64.7 percent of the entire bill of Melbourne’s St Jerome’s Laneway Festival at Footscray Community Arts Centre on Saturday. (Fans of Girls, The Panics, The Horrors and SBTRKT send your grievances to PO Box 475, Prahran, VIC 3181, or just wait for the Sydney review.) Photos by MICHAEL BAINBRIDGE . The ominous clouds that “greeted” punters at last year’s St Jerome’s Laneway Festival were replaced by near-perfect skies and a mercury that hovered above 30 degrees all day. For the third year running, the festival returned to the Footscray Community ...

  • Twin Shadow: Past echoes
There's a few hairy minutes before I get hold of George Lewis Jr, missed calls going to the neutral tone of his answering machine message. Then, on a last-ditch effort, he picks up. "I was like, where the fuck is this coming from?"...

  • Sinkane – Jeeper Creeper
Download link is in the original post Sounds like: Yeasayer, Caribou Song: Sinkane - Jeeper Creeper [download here ] What's so good? Ahmed Gallab has a knack for creating beats that grab your attention right from the get-go. Known for his work as Yeasayer’s residential multi-instrumentalist, Gallab has played with many music heavy-hitters such as Of Montreal and Caribou. When he’s not going cray on drums with Yeasayer, he’s making some excellent tunage under his pseudonym, Sinkane. “Jeeper Creeper” is a track off his forthcoming LP release, Mars , and if you had no clue that Gallab is linked ...

  • Wax Analysis #3
A UK special this one and in the words of one Mark E Smith it's time to leave the capital! ...well not just yet but it must be said its over-rated, expensive and there’s no need to paraphrase Marc Riley (more Fall references for you). Here’s the ever excellent Brainlove Records from that infernal London. Let's have a lookie at some of their great artists: Brainlove is pretty much a one man army with John Brainlove running the label, managing artists, promoting and DJing and writing articles, when does he sleep? Three things on BRNLV really ...

  • Sinkane: "Jeeper Creeper"
When he's not getting weird behind the drums with his bandmates in anthemic avant-pop outfit Yeasayer , Ahmed Gallab makes music on his own, too, as Sinkane . According to DIY , Sinkane's third LP, Mars , is due for release later this year and will feature collaborations from Twin Shadow 's George Lewis, Jr. and Yeasayer's Ira Wolf. "Jeeper Creeper" could very well appear on that album. (via DIY )

SPIN has spent the past few months tracking bands' journeys into the Moog Sound Lab. This experiment has brought you dramatic reworkings of songs by Little Dragon , Twin Shadow , the Antlers , and Ra Ra Riot . But we are not done yet! Today, the folks at electronic music pioneer Bob Moog's Asheville, North Carolina studio have a fresh clip from Megafaun. What you are seeing below is the North Carolina-based trio performing "State/Meant" off their self-titled 2011 debut using the Moog Sound Lab's array of goodies: a Moog Guitar, a Minimoog Voyager that's MIDI controlling Moog's ...

  • PORCELAIN RAFT Strange Weekend
There has been a raft (ouch) of one-man, two-word band name outfits surfing the spreading tail-end of chillwave in different directions: Washed Out, Memory Tapes, Neon Indian, even extending to the retro sythn-pop revivalism of Twin Shadow. The opening track on the debut Porcelain Raft album, ‘Drifting In And Out’ (followed by ‘Shapeless and Gone’ and later ‘Put Me To Sleep’) suggests another fellow traveller tracking this curve. Mauro Remiddi aka Porcelain Raft distances himself however from a reductive re-run of blissed-out balminess even on the first song. ‘Drifting In And Out’ is built on frail voiced melodies and compressed ...
